Three perfect days in Key West from Azure Bay

Key West is small, only four miles long and two miles wide, but it rewards people who slow down. Our guest experiences team gets asked for a three-day plan more than any other question, so we wrote down the version we give our friends. It balances beach time with just enough exploring, and it leaves room for the afternoon nap that the island practically insists on.

Every stop below is reachable by bike or our free shuttle, and none of it requires an early alarm unless you want one.

Day one: arrive, unpack, reset

Whether you fly into Key West International or drive the Overseas Highway, the first rule is simple: do nothing ambitious. Drop your bags, change into something linen and head straight to the lagoon pool. Order a frozen key lime mojito at Salt and Lime and let the travel day melt off.

In the late afternoon, borrow a pair of beach cruisers and ride the Atlantic side of the island toward the Southernmost Point. The light is soft, the traffic is light and the ride gives you a feel for the island's scale. Continue to Mallory Square for the nightly Sunset Celebration, where fire jugglers, tightrope walkers and a cheerful crowd applaud the sun as it drops behind Sunset Key.

For dinner, skip the Duval Street crowds and walk to Bahama Village. Blue Heaven's courtyard, strung with lights and roamed by the island's famous chickens, is a Key West rite of passage.

Day two: reef, rest and Old Town

Book the morning Sand Key snorkel with our naturalist guide. The boat leaves the resort dock at 8:30 am and reaches the only living coral reef in the continental United States in about 40 minutes. Expect parrotfish, sergeant majors, brain coral and, if you are lucky, a sleepy nurse shark under a ledge. The water is usually calm and clear before the afternoon breeze picks up.

Back at the resort by lunch, eat ceviche at Salt and Lime and then commit fully to the island nap. We recommend a Poolside Cabana or a hammock in the gardens.

In the late afternoon, take the shuttle into Old Town. Tour the Ernest Hemingway Home before its 5 pm close, then wander Whitehead and Caroline Streets for galleries and gingerbread houses. Book an early dinner at Driftwood when you get back, ideally at the 6:45 pm sunset seating.

Plan one thing each morning and nothing each afternoon. That is the whole secret to Key West.

Day three: choose your adventure

Your last full day depends on your mood. For a bucket-list experience, fly by seaplane to Dry Tortugas National Park, 70 miles west, where Fort Jefferson rises from turquoise water. The half-day trip gets you back in time for a late lunch.

If you would rather stay close, book the mangrove kayak eco tour on Geiger Key. The clear-bottom kayaks let you watch baby lemon sharks and rays glide beneath you through quiet backcountry channels.

Spend the afternoon at Tidewater Spa. The Tidewater signature massage uses warm coconut oil and a sea salt foot ritual, and the vitality pool afterward is the ideal way to end a trip. Finish with the sunset catamaran sail from our dock, rum punch in hand.

Practical tips from our concierge

  • Bikes are faster than cars in Old Town. Parking is scarce and expensive.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen is required by local ordinance and good for the reef. We stock it at the water sports hut.
  • Sunset times change by up to 90 minutes through the year. Ask the front desk each morning.
  • Reserve Driftwood sunset seating and spa treatments before you arrive, especially in winter and spring.
  • Carry a refillable bottle. The August sun is no joke, and there are water stations all over the resort.

Three days is enough to fall for Key West, and just short enough to guarantee you will want to come back. When you do, the hammock will be waiting.
